Curatorial Talk with Valerie Hellstein
The downtown art scene in New York City in the late 1940s and early 1950s was a tight-knit community. While Clyfford Still embraced individuality above all, he was not a solitary, lone individual painting for his own sake and was an active participant in this community. The exhibition Dialogue and Defiance: Clyfford Still and the Abstract Expressionists explores this community of artists and Still’s place within it and hopes to dispel the myth of the artist as an isolated genius. Guest curator and art historian Valerie Hellstein took us into the world of the Abstract Expressionists with her talk to see how we might rethink this community.
The talk took place in the CSM lobby on June 6, 202...

Most, if not ALL these “talking heads” are talking BS. They are talking around his message. . . being PC. This artist was not just a colorist or thinking of using jagged edges as some kind of stupid design motif. His personality tells it all . . . he was “effin” mad with America’s BS and the art community at large. Rothko, compared to Still was/is a wus. Rothko has nothing to say, besides colors that matches one’s new sofa, and he knew it, then committed suicide knowing he was going no where intellectually or psychologically with his work. These critics can make sh _it up for a kindergartner’s finger painting. They are no more than copywriters to sell merchandise. . . to make money. Spewing out “intellectual-speak,” having no real substance. Revered as art critics, yet dead as a door nail on the inside.

Clyfford Still depicted the most intense emotional and psychologically devastating astigmatism of white America - THEIR enslavement and THEIR hatred towards the magnificence of the black man. The blood spilled. The terror evoked. The misery of being. The lost strength and knowledge. The waste of humanity. Yet, a line of hope is held onto ruthlessly and savagely yet with a tearful remembrance of past memories. Alien memories from another space in time. This could also be easily interpreted as the violence towards the Native Indians, the Chinese, the Mexicans. The foolish arrogance of a white man. Still’s painting aren’t of “…beautiful, spacious skies and amber waves of grain.” There are intense emotions of anger, betrayal and violence. The LINE of Hope is being searched for, yet not quite discovered.

I think Still painted from the side and left to right, and then turned the painting to the orientation you see on museum walls. The brushstrokes suggest this.

I'm reading Franz Kline: The Artist's Materials right now, and it's interesting to see how thinking has changed about some of the details of this presentation over time. Nothing huge, but Kline was painting Corinthian II before the fire that destroyed the original Corinthian. Stuff like that. I'm glad the conservators have gotten the time they need to delve deep into Kline's history and methods. His work seems like it's in good hands.

You really should have interviewed JOSEPH MARIONI for this documentary. He was one of the very few that Still actually created a dialogue with that he still has the letters and even a customized painting that none of you probably know about. He was very special to Marioni as Marioni was special to him. The Still museum SHOULD put an exhibition together pairing Marioni with Still. He actually walked through the MET museum with Still after it was hung.

Very un-interesting, mediocre abstract works. Perhaps if the "artist" concentrated more on the images rather than his own obsession with race, his works would be much more substantial.
